In the climactic last scene of Kathryn Bigelow’s masterful surf-thriller Point Break, our wet-behind-the-ears policeman avatar, Johnny Utah, clad in a rain-soaked 1990’s Canadian tuxedo, stealthily handcuffs our adrenaline-junky hero Bodhi (née Ronald Reagan) after underwater fisticuffs and, rising to the surface, says, “I told them you’d go quietly.” But the Fifty Year Storm has churned the Australian ocean into a playground of Waves of a Lifetime, and the legs of the law are but flimsy impediments to Bodhi’s enthusiasm for a death at sea. “You know there’s no way I can handle a cage, man,” says Bodhi, invoking his inner Maya Angelou. Enter, then, front and center, Utah’s unmitigated guilt and shame. When Utah unshackles Bodhi, and, moments later, tosses his badge into the shorepound, it’s a reluctant admission of the sadness pervading the life patterns of staid contemporary adult-ism he’s sworn to protect. Gun-toting, bank-robbing, sky-diving, beer-drinking Bodhi is the physical embodiment of the lightening storm inhabiting his guts and veins. He has no home, pays no taxes, does not kowtow to romance or God, and lives apart, separate, as a ringleader to a posse of dead or soon-to-be-dead Ex-Presidents. “Why be servant to the law when you can be its master?” he says. He’s traded the coffee pot and a queen-sized bed for a sawed-off and a surfboard, and we’re left like Utah, wondering just what in the hell we’re waiting for. A raise? Better APR rates? Our tax return?A movie that ends with the (implied) drowning of our hero should be sad, morbid, tragic. But our Bodhi goes down, enveloped by whitewash, and stays down, and it’s anything but a failure. Bodhi is (literally) the awakened, the enlightened, the final arbiter on the nature of things. So that when Utah says to him in parting, “Vaya con díos,” I like to imagine that Bodhi would much rather vaya con pizza instead.

Unless, of course, God is referring in Yoda-esque parlance to this Falling Down. In which case, our maiden voyage would be well-steeped in deadlock. Falling Down is certainly no failure. I’m highly dubious, though, that God and Whammyburger are consenting intimates. So.
